PDP Crisis Worsened by Conflict of Interest, Personal Ambition – Ex-Delta Rep

A former member of the House of Representatives from Delta State has attributed the lingering crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to conflicting interests and personal ambitions among party leaders. The ex-lawmaker, who spoke in an interview, noted that the party’s inability to resolve internal disputes has weakened its structure and electoral chances.

Internal Rivalries Deepen Party Crisis

The PDP, which once dominated Nigeria’s political landscape, has been grappling with factional disagreements, leadership tussles, and defection of key members to rival parties. According to the former lawmaker, the crisis is largely fueled by:

  • Personal ambitions of party leaders, who prioritize their political careers over party unity.
  • Power struggles among governors and party executives, making reconciliation difficult.
  • Zoning disagreements, which have led to divisions over who should lead the party at the national and state levels.

“Many leaders within the PDP are more concerned about their personal ambitions than the party’s collective interest. This is why we keep seeing factional battles, suspensions, and defections,” the ex-Rep stated.

Calls for Unity and Reconciliation

The former Delta lawmaker urged party leaders to put aside their differences and focus on rebuilding PDP into a formidable opposition party. He emphasized the need for:

  • Internal dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms to address grievances.
  • A clear succession plan that balances party loyalty with inclusivity.
  • Discipline and adherence to party principles to avoid further fragmentation.

Future of PDP in 2027 Elections

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the former legislator warned that if the PDP fails to resolve its crisis, it could suffer further losses at the polls. He called on party stakeholders to act swiftly in restoring unity, credibility, and trust within the party.

As PDP struggles to navigate its internal challenges, many political analysts believe that its ability to reconcile differences will determine its strength ahead of future elections.
