KAI Arraigns Six for Selling Alcohol in Traffic
The Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force has arraigned six individuals for allegedly selling alcohol in traffic within Lagos State. The suspects were apprehended during a recent operation aimed at curbing illegal street trading and maintaining order on the highways.
According to the KAI authorities, the arrests were made in areas notorious for traffic congestion and street trading, where the sale of alcohol has been identified as a contributing factor to reckless behavior among motorists and pedestrians. The accused were charged before a mobile court for violating Lagos State Environmental Laws, which prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages in unauthorized locations, including major roads and highways.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence showing that the suspects were caught selling alcohol to commercial drivers, passengers, and pedestrians in traffic. Authorities argued that such activities not only violate state regulations but also pose a safety risk, as intoxicated drivers are more prone to accidents.
The presiding magistrate ordered the accused to be remanded pending further investigations, with the possibility of fines or community service as penalties if found guilty.
Speaking on the development, KAI Commander Ibrahim Bakare reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and discouraging unlawful activities that endanger public safety. He warned street traders, especially those selling prohibited items like alcohol, to desist from such practices or risk arrest and prosecution.
Meanwhile, some residents and transport workers have reacted to the arrests, with mixed opinions. While some support the enforcement action, citing concerns over reckless driving and insecurity, others believe the government should provide alternative locations for small-scale traders to conduct their businesses legally.
KAI has vowed to intensify its operations against street trading, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and other violations to ensure a cleaner and safer Lagos environment.
