Host Community Seeks Inclusion in Enugu’s Farm Estate Project
Residents of the host community where the Enugu Farm Estate project is being developed have called on the state government to ensure their full inclusion in the initiative. The community members expressed concerns that despite their land being used for the project, they have not been adequately consulted or considered for key roles in its development.
Speaking at a town hall meeting, community leaders emphasized the need for employment opportunities, infrastructure development, and economic benefits for the locals. They argued that since the project is situated on their ancestral land, they should be prioritized in job allocations, training programs, and agricultural support schemes.
One of the community representatives, Chief Emmanuel Nwodo, stated, “We welcome the farm estate project because it promises economic development, but we do not want to be sidelined. Our youths should be given jobs, and our farmers should be empowered to participate in this initiative.”
The Enugu Farm Estate, spearheaded by the state government in collaboration with private investors, aims to boost agricultural production, create jobs, and enhance food security in the region. The project includes crop farming, livestock rearing, processing facilities, and modern agricultural training centers.
In response, government officials assured the host community of their commitment to inclusive development. A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Nneka Okafor, stated that provisions had been made to ensure that community members benefit from the project through employment slots, cooperative support, and access to farm inputs.
The community, however, urged the government to formalize these commitments through written agreements and a clear framework that guarantees local participation. They also called for the establishment of a community-government liaison committee to oversee the fair implementation of these promises.
With construction and land preparation already underway, stakeholders hope that an agreement will be reached to ensure harmonious cooperation between the government, investors, and the host community.
