Ex-Imo Attorney General Urges Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu for National Healing

A former Attorney General of Imo State has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a step towards fostering national reconciliation and peace.

The legal expert emphasized that Kanu’s prolonged detention has continued to fuel tensions in the South-East region, deepening grievances and instability. He urged the federal government to consider a political resolution to the matter, rather than a prolonged legal battle that could worsen discontent among Kanu’s supporters.

The appeal comes amid growing calls from various political, traditional, and religious leaders advocating for Kanu’s freedom as a means to ease agitations in the region. Many believe that his release could serve as a significant step toward addressing the underlying issues of marginalization and mistrust between the federal government and the South-East.

Since his re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), facing trial on charges related to terrorism and treasonable felony. However, legal battles over his continued detention have led to rulings in his favor, including a Court of Appeal judgment that ordered his release, which the federal government has yet to implement.

The former Imo AG stressed that a decision to free Kanu would demonstrate President Tinubu’s commitment to national unity and inclusive governance. He argued that dialogue and reconciliation, rather than force, would be the most effective way to resolve the lingering crisis in the South-East.

As pressure mounts on the federal government to act, observers are keen to see whether Tinubu will heed the call for Kanu’s release as part of broader efforts to ensure peace and stability in the country.
