The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, and governorship candidate in the Imo State November 11, 2023 election, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, on Tuesday said Nigeria is on a journey to perfect democracy.
Speaking through a release signed by his Media Adviser, Ikenna Onuoha, and made available to South-East correspondent in Owerri, Anynawu congratulated Nigerians on this year’s Democracy Day, urging them to be more determined to ensure that the system works in the country.
Anyanwu said, “Despite its imperfection; democracy remains the best option for the country, adding that through the determination of the citizens and their active participation in the democratic process, Nigerians can achieve the truly great country of their dreams.”
He said, “Our only major setback in Nigeria is corruption and insatiable quest for wealth and primitive acquisition of material things. If our leaders can develop a spirit of development and genuine service to their fatherland, I am confident that this country will be the best among other nations. God has blessed our land with beautiful natural resources, but it becomes more worrisome when an individual converts virtually what should be enough for 1 million Nigerians to personal use. This is the height of wickedness and disservice to the nation.”
The PDP National Secretary, who stated this in his goodwill message to commemorate this year’s June 12, 2024 Democracy Day, further urged Nigerians not to relent in their search for lasting peace as a necessary condition for progress and prosperity.
He applauded the heroic deeds of patriots who worked assiduously to actualize democratic rule in the country, especially, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Margaret Ekpo, Anthony Enahoro, and the symbol of the June 12 struggle, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola amongst others, saying, only a truly great, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria could be a befitting compensation for their sacrifices.
