Gunmen suspected to be bandits carried out a deadly attack on Thursday in several communities within the Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in the loss of 16 lives.
This tragic incident occurred just a day after rival militia groups wreaked havoc on the Gbagir community in Ukum Local Government Area, claiming the lives of at least 40 individuals.
According to reports, the assailants launched the attack on Thursday, targeting approximately 11 communities, where they perpetrated acts of violence and destruction.
In response to the escalating situation, the state’s deputy governor, Sam Ode, along with security chiefs, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area.
Upon inquiry, Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Benue State Command, assured that further details would be provided once Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina, who was on site in the troubled region, returned.
