Back Your Education with Practical Skills, Otti Advises NBU Freshers

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged newly admitted students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NBU) to complement their academic studies with practical skills to enhance their future career prospects.

Speaking at the university’s matriculation ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that while formal education is essential, students must equip themselves with hands-on skills relevant to today’s rapidly evolving job market. He noted that the world is shifting towards a skills-based economy, where practical knowledge and innovation play a key role in securing employment and entrepreneurial success.

“Education is a great foundation, but without applicable skills, your chances of excelling in today’s competitive world are limited,” Otti said. “The most successful people are those who can combine knowledge with skills to create value.”

The governor encouraged students to take advantage of vocational training, technology-based learning, and entrepreneurship programs while in school. He cited industries such as ICT, digital marketing, and creative arts as examples where young people can thrive with the right skill set.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor also echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging students to engage in extracurricular activities that would broaden their knowledge beyond the classroom. He assured that the institution is committed to providing an environment that fosters both academic and practical learning.

Many students welcomed the governor’s advice, acknowledging the importance of acquiring additional skills to stand out in the competitive job market. Some expressed interest in pursuing tech-related and business-oriented programs alongside their studies.

Governor Otti’s address highlights the growing emphasis on skill acquisition in Nigeria’s education sector, as more stakeholders push for a blend of academic excellence and hands-on experience to prepare students for the realities of the workforce.
