Renowned activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Deji Adeyanju has described The PUNCH as a defender of democracy and human rights.
Adeyanju stated this in a goodwill message issued on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the widely read newspaper.
The message read in part, “Congratulations on reaching the milestone of 50 years. Throughout these five decades, you have been a champion of human rights and a steadfast defender of democracy in Nigeria. Your relentless fight against military dictatorship and your commitment to enthrone constitutional democracy deserve utmost recognition and praise.
“The PUNCH, you have consistently stood with the oppressed, given voice to the voiceless, and fought for the cause of the vulnerable. Your dedication to shining a light on injustice and holding those in power accountable has made an indelible impact in our country.
“The role you have played in the last 50 years has not only strengthened legal jurisprudence in the country but has also inspired countless people to stand up for their rights. One of your remarkable qualities is your commitment to the truth, even in the face of adversity. You have never wavered nor compromised your journalistic standards and integrity, and this has earned you the respect and trust of the Nigerian people.”
The activist recalled a time when speaking truth to power was not convenient for some news channels, adding however that The PUNCH chose to stand alone in the defence of liberty on behalf of the people.
“I vividly remember when you were the first to label former President Muhammadu Buhari as a tyrant and referred to him as ‘General Buhari’ for exhibiting despotic tendencies in democratic governance. Your courage to speak truth to power exemplifies the essence of responsible journalism.
“As you celebrate this milestone, I would like to enjoin you to continue upholding the highest ethics of journalism, which you have maintained over the last 50 years. Your dedication to truth, accuracy, and transparency has been a guiding light in Nigeria’s media landscape. I encourage you to keep holding the government accountable, giving voice to the marginalized, and fighting for justice and equality.
“Once again, congratulations on your 50th anniversary. May The PUNCH Newspapers continue to be a beacon of hope and a voice for the voiceless in Nigeria.
“Wishing you another 50 years of remarkable journalism from all of us at Concerned Nigerians,” he added.
