Senior Clerics Compete for Northern CAN Leadership

Leadership Crisis Erupts in Northern CAN Over Tenure Dispute

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory is facing a leadership crisis following allegations of tenure elongation.

The dispute revolves around Rev. Yakubu Pam, whose tenure as chairman allegedly expired over two years ago. A faction led by Rev. Joseph Hayab recently held an election, declaring him the new chairman, but Pam’s camp dismissed the process as a “religious coup” and “fraudulent.”

Pam’s supporters argue that his leadership remains legitimate, citing Northern CAN’s bylaws, which allow a four-year tenure renewable for another term. However, Hayab insists that Pam’s term ended in 2022, making the election necessary.

The crisis has deepened divisions within Northern CAN, raising concerns about the association’s unity and its ability to represent Christian interests in the region.
