Nursing council assesses McPherson varsity for admission quota raise, faculty approval

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has carried out a resource verification at McPherson University, Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State.

A statement made available to PUNCH Online by the universityโ€™s Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Olatokunbo Olakunle, on Saturday noted that the visit was in response to the institutionโ€™s request for an increase in its admission quota for the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme and its ambition to establish a Faculty of Nursing.

The resource verification team was led by a council member, Mrs. Awe Adekemi.

The statement read, โ€œThe exercise commenced with a thorough staff audit, where the team assessed the qualifications and capacity of the universityโ€™s academic and administrative personnel in the Nursing Science Department. This was followed by an inspection of the institutionโ€™s facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, and clinical training equipment.

โ€œDuring the tour, the team expressed their surprise at the state-of-the-art facilities and high-quality equipment available at McU. They commended the Institution for its commitment to providing an excellent learning environment for nursing students.

โ€œThe Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Igbasan, along with his management team, warmly received the NMCN delegation. He reassured them of the universityโ€™s dedication to maintaining high standards in nursing education and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

โ€œIgbasan also highlighted McUโ€™s vision of becoming a leading centre for nursing education in Nigeria. He noted that securing approval for a Faculty of Nursing would further enhance the Universityโ€™s ability to train competent and well-equipped healthcare professionals.โ€

The statement added that this verification exercise โ€œmarks a crucial step in McUโ€™s journey towards expanding its nursing programmeโ€

The outcome of the assessment will determine if the institution meets the necessary standards for an increased admission quota and the establishment of a Faculty of Nursing in the institution.

Recall that the National Universities Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, granted the institution full accreditation in 2023, a move that was greeted with lots of appreciation by the management, staff and students.

Also, the NUC approved sevenย additional coursesย for McPherson University in July 2024.

The accredited programmes include Medical Laboratory Science, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Mass Communication.
