Cabinet members have opposed the suspension of the monarch of the Yoruba community in Sokoto State, Alhaji Abdulfatai Coker.

The cabinet members passed a vote of confidence in Coker, saying he had done nothing wrong to justify his suspension from office as the Sarikin Yorubawa of Sokoto.

reports that the Yoruba Community Council in Sokoto State, on Monday, declared Coker suspended.

The suspension was conveyed in a letter dated April 19, 2024, which was signed by the council’s President General, Chief James Olorunfemi; and secretary, Imam Abdulwahab Lawal.

The council said, “In line with the provision of the Constitution of the Yoruba Council, Sokoto, Article 9()d, the Yoruba community has the power to remove the Sarikin Yoruba (Oba of Yoruba), if found wanting in the discharge of his duties.”

However, the cabinet members of the Sarikin Yorubawa of Sokoto opposed the suspension, saying they believed in Coker’s leadership.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday, the cabinet members, namely: Alhaji Alimi Adeola, Alhaji Surajudeen Shabi and Alhaji Saka Sadiq, said the allegations level against  Coker were mere trivial.

“We noted with full sense of responsibility the purported suspension of our monarch, which is full of ambiguity and without stating any specific criminal act committed by the Oba Yoruba and the council.

“We, the entire members of the council, which includes the Baales, wish to use this medium to adequately intimate you of our stand.

“We remain resolute and unshaken in our resolution and believe God to remain our guide and guard, while we maintain our best wish to the entire Yoruba residence in Sokoto and others in the North generally.

“We remain resolute that other development will unfold soonest. It is common knowledge that nobody can be a judge in his own case.”

The cabinet members called on the Yoruba in the state to remain calm.
