Five months into the armed conflict that engulfed Gaza over the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by the Islamist group, Hamas, the United Nations Security Council on Monday passed a resolution demanding ceasefire to the war.
The resolution followed the restrain by the United States from vetoing the measure of change from its initial position on the war.
In the same vein, the Council also demanded an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages on both sides.
No fewer than 32, 333 Palestinians have been reportedly killed and 74, 694 others wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza, while the death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attack stands at 1,139, with dozens still held captive.
The UN body has been criticized over its inability to halt further aggression by Israel that led to huge casualties on the side of the Palestinians amid global demand for humanitarian intervention for food and other aids as well as safety of women and children that are most affected and trapped in the offensive.
